Cadillac Brand History at Keyes Cars

Did you know that the Cadillac brand you know and love today was formed from traces of the Henry Ford Company? In 1902, Henry Ford and his investors had a falling out and a few financial backers created the Cadillac Automobile Company with engineer Henry Leland, who designed a single-cylinder engine. By October of that year, two models were already on the market: the Runabout and the Tonneau. There were some similarities between these cars and the 1903 Ford Model A, but the Cadillac company marketed them as a “better-made vehicle” than its competitors.

The Cadillac brand is the second-oldest automobile brands in the world and it has always prided itself on creating vehicles with impeccable engineering features, stylish and luxurious finishes and highly advanced engines. It was the first volume manufacturer of a fully enclosed car in 1906 and won the Dewar Trophy in 1908 for its interchangeability capabilities. It was also the first to incorporate an electrical system with start, ignition and lighting in 1912. In the meantime, the Cadillac brand was purchased by General Motors in 1909. The bigger brand maintained Cadillac’s luxurious concept and marketing angle and continued to make technology advancements a key part of the brand moving forward.

But when did these innovations take place? In 1915, the Cadillac brand debuted a 90-degree flathead V8 engine with 70 horsepower that got cars up to 65 mph—which was faster than most roads could handle at the time. A dual-plane V8 crankshaft debuted in 1918 and the first V16 engine was implemented in 1930. It has continued until modern day, with the 1990s entry into the SUV market all the way to the 2014 Cadillac ELR, an electric-hybrid coupe.
